Women are from Venus, part deux (Contest Closed)

by Fiddledeedee on July 26, 2012

Recently I had the pleasure of participating in a review of the Venus Embrace razor and its sidekick, Satin Care Passionista Fruit Shave Gel (with its fruity scent which I LOVE). Both are brands that I’ve used on a regular basis for a number of years. And I’m not exaggerating one bit when I say that the Venus Embrace razor has enabled me to exit my bathroom WITHOUT the telltale dots of toilet paper adorning my legs from the carnage of shaving. I’ve been able to introduce this system to both of my daughters (ages 12 and 10) who are new to the joys of shaving. This campaign helped me open up a dialogue with them regarding hygiene and beauty maintenance. Venus has invited all of the daughters of the bloggers in this campaign to interview their mothers regarding “Summer Beauty Do’s and Don’ts.” My 12-year-old ran with this project. She joyously compiled a list with which to interrogate me. I’ve had to edit a few questions, because evidently INAPPROPRIATE HUMOR is hereditary.

Question #1: Mom, how often do you shave your legs?

Answer #1: Every stinking day. Once you start, there’s no turning back. I have gotten much faster in my old age, as I can now shave a pair of underpits plus two legs in just under 3 minutes. My personal best.

Question #2: How often do you change the blade of your razor?

Answer #2: Whenever the blades go on sale. And I have a coupon. Did I say that out loud? Fortunately for me my Venus razor is very forgiving when I forget to change the blades in a timely manner, and I’ve never received a nick or cut due to my blade changing negligence.

Question #3: What is a good beauty tip for when it’s raining and your hair is frizzy?

Answer #3: Send your daughter out to the mailbox. And have a nice collection of hats.

Question #4: What is a good foundation that works for you?

Answer #4: Do your best and always wear clean underwear (insert eye roll of the interviewer).  Fine.  I gravitate towards high-end drug store mineral powder foundation. As long as its on sale and I have a coupon.

Question #5: When can I start wearing makeup without you yelling at me?

Answer #5: First of all, I don’t yell. I remind. Loudly. Because evidently you haven’t heard me the first FOUR HUNDRED times I’ve told you no makeup until you’re 13.

Question #6: Can I borrow your mascara?

Answer #6: No. And you should never borrow anyone’s mascara because disease gets passed that way and you can get an eye infection and your eyeball will fall out and you’ll need an eyepatch. Thusly ending your mascara wearing days. (I have a spot all picked out on my bookshelf for my Mother of the Year Award, by the way.)

Question #7: Is it bad to share hair brushes?

Answer #7: Yes. (This is a hot-button topic around our house because dear friends of ours recently had to deal with a lice infestation. For a more natural remedy, read the post I dedicated to this issue here.)

Question #8: Can chocolate make you have zits?

Answer #8: I’ve heard this is an old wives’ tale. But my personal scientific research has told me that around the time of the year that Thin Mints enter the fray, I have a massive breakout. So I’d have to answer yes. But it’s totally worth it.

Question #9: What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done in the name of beauty?

Answer #9: Where do I begin? Okay, as an extraordinarily fair teenager, using baby oil as suntan lotion at the beach. I couldn’t bend my arms or legs for a week.

I think she has a future as a talk show host. Or an angst ridden teenager.

Funniest beauty mishap…..SunIn. I have dark brown hair….I wanted golden blonde hair…..I got red hair and not a pretty red either! :( Had to cut my hair short till that mess grew out! I was around 15 at the time.

2 Carol July 26, 2012 at 11:24 pm

Funniest mishap – accidentally putting a scalp mask on as a face mask. Yeah, my face was red and swollen for days…… Not a pretty site.

And I second the SunIn. Not sure why, but I used it when I was in high school even though my brown hair naturally turned light during the summer.

3 Christine July 27, 2012 at 8:29 am

Remember the days when make-up was to be noticed, rather than natural?

Well, once in those days, I got into a huge fight with my brother before going to school. It wasn’t till returning home from school that I realized that I had somehow managed to put makeup on only one side of my face! (Still can’t figure that one out. . .)

My daughter is ten and we’re starting the beauty discussions. My biggest tip is to keep your skin moisterized. I now have her hooked on scented lotions. Right now her favorite is strawberry with glitter.

5 Kristie July 27, 2012 at 9:21 am

Well I always loved the sun in…being a strawberry blond the red highlights worked for me except the straw like substance by the summer end that was my hair! So my advice for my daughter was skip the sun in and alway keep a new razor on hand!

6 Stacey July 27, 2012 at 11:29 am

Hmmmm…where to begin. Sun In…frosty green eye shadow….frosty purplish lipstick, pastel pink blush, bronzing powder that was WAY too dark and used WAY too liberally. The 80′s!!!

7 Susan July 27, 2012 at 11:35 am

Ugh … SunIn brings back bad memories. Unfortunately, the summer of my bad experience was also after my junior year in high school right before I had my senior pictures taken. So my usually medium brunette hair was strawberry blonde in my senior pictures, my stupid mistake documented forever.

Second place goes to the baby oil all over my bod in an attempt to make my fair skin tan. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I am still incredibly embarrased by my white legs in the summer, but fortunately self tanners have now arrived on the scene. Remembering to use it everyother day is a pain, but it beats the time and pain of the alternative!

8 rebecca July 27, 2012 at 11:36 am

using my brother’s QT (quick tan self tanner) back in the 80′s thinking it was regular sunscreen. Was bright orange streaked for days. Looked great at church the next day in my sleeveless white dress. why didn’t someone tell me to put on a long-sleeved turtleneck?

9 JennyJoT July 27, 2012 at 11:43 am

No daughters, but if I did, I’d tell her the best beauty tips are to SMILE a lot, and act confident (not cocky) even when you don’t feel that way.

Beauty mishap= sweating while dancing and having false eyelashes become UNGLUED =)

my beauty tip is to wear sunscreen every day

My beauty tip is to take a shower. At least once every three days. Brushing your teeth at least once a day is another good one.

Love the interview. Oh the theatrics that must go on there…

14 Devyn July 28, 2012 at 11:53 am

Beauty mishaps. I could write a book.

But the one that mortified me the most (because it stayed around a while) was when I used acne facial cleansing pads on my face as a 15 year old… And they dyed my eyebrows and a thin stripe of hair all around my face light blonde. (I have dark brown hair)

15 Amanda Sakovitz July 28, 2012 at 12:48 pm

The best summer beauty tip I’ve given is to wash your face every night before bed especially if you have makeup on.

Beauty mishap…Quote: “How about if I just trim my bangs before going to the prom??” It didn’t work out so well.

22 steph July 28, 2012 at 5:02 pm

my biggest mishap was wearing blue eyeliner, yuck!

23 steph July 28, 2012 at 5:02 pm
24 Renae July 28, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Beauty tip is to wear a lotion that has sunscreen in it. Moisture and protection.

25 Jessica W July 28, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Mis-hap: Letting a friend “trim” my hair. We were 17. It was in the middle of the night. We had to wake up her mom to come fix it.

26 Michelle H. July 29, 2012 at 2:39 pm

My biggest beauty mishap was when I tried to highlight my hair at home; It was one of those kits where you pull the hair through the cap with a little crochet needle and someone how I ended up with a boatload of highlights on the left side of my head and very few on the right (I assume because I’m right-handed, it was easier to pull out from the left). I ended up calling my mom to come over and redo the right side for me. It still wasn’t even but it was better. I think they wrote “Kids don’t try this at home” especially for me.

28 Laura Jacobson July 29, 2012 at 9:08 pm

My funniest beauty mishap happened years ago. I was getting ready for work….during a storm. Power went out. No lights in the bathroom as I was finishing getting ready for work and putting on my makeup. I thought…I have done this so many times…I could do it in my sleep! Haha..wrong. My blush and powder foundation where in a container that looked almost the same. I ended up putting my blush on all over instead of the powder! Haha…..I laughed so hard when I got in the car and looked in the rearview mirror!

30 Kelly D July 29, 2012 at 11:20 pm

The beauty tip I give my daughter is to wear her hair up in the summer months, either in ponytails or buns, to keep her cool and her skin free of sweat.

32 Allisha Gold July 29, 2012 at 11:53 pm

My funniest beauty mishap was letting my mom quickly “trim” my bangs while I was in a hurry to leave for a dance while I was in school. My bangs were too long and getting in my eyes so I let her try to trim them and they ended up short, slanted and uneven.
Thank you!

Daily shaving really is the way to go; never get caught off guard that way! My funniest mishap was the time I used a mayonaise mask on my hair. I don’t even have words for how difficut that was to wash out.

42 Krissy August 6, 2012 at 7:41 am

My beauty mishap was acquiescing to my husband’s request that the next time I had my hair colored I should go red. I am no stranger to the “do it yourself” hair color box so I decided to surprise him for our date nite. Unfortunately my hair came out Ronald McDonald red (not at all like what was on the box). My husband loved it and I sat in tears. I ended up getting a box of color oops from the drugstore to undo my mess. The color oops worked great however my hair smelled like sulfur for 3 days.

43 Cindy in GA August 6, 2012 at 9:10 am

Beauty mishap: I was 16 and wanted blonde highlights in my hair – on the cheap. I put 1/2 lemon juice and 1/2 water in a spray bottle and sprayed it all over my hair before spending the afternoon in the sun. First, did you know that lemon juice hardens like shellac? Second, did you know that it can be extremely irritating to the skin? Probably not too great for the hair, either – especially on top of the perm. It may have actually lightened my hair a little, but I never did it again!

44 ANGEL JACKLYN August 6, 2012 at 3:34 pm

For fizzys, use a straightener. For protection, buy the thermal heat spray to put in before using the straightener.

My oldest is 8 – a little young to be sharing beauty secrets with, though I have recently introduced her to face soap after I noticed she had a few blackheads. We have had discussions about the importance of keeping our skin clean, especially in the heat of the summer, and I have bought her some special all-natural soap to use. To me, this is the first sign of her growing up into a young woman and I admit I’m a little sad about that!

51 atlantagalknows August 10, 2012 at 9:50 pm

My best tip is to keep your eyebrows well-plucked. It takes 5 minutes to do every week or so, and makes a huge impact!

52 Cynthia P. August 12, 2012 at 7:46 pm

In response to my sister claiming I had a fuzzy face, I once tried to remedy that with a shave.

53 sy August 12, 2012 at 9:19 pm

When we were younger my sister stole my liptsick and smeared it all over her face, and she thought she looked pretty. It was too funny.

This year for Independence Day I thought I would dye my oldest daughters hair red with Kool-Aid. I read that it should last about a week. 6 weeks later it is still as bright red as the day I dyed it. I don’t think she will be taking in beauty tips from me for a long time!

Best summer beauty tip to my nieces – always wear sunscreen on your face. Use a hat when out in the sun. Do it for the wrinkle prevention.

64 maria cantu August 19, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Always use moisturizer.

I used a new soap without testing it first. All over body rash as a result. Summertime, no pool time for a month while the rash was going away.

68 Mary B August 21, 2012 at 2:14 pm

With 2 daughters with different personalities I always tell them to be themselves. The younger one is only 10 but she always needs to keep up on the lotion during the summer. Her skin gets so dry its crazy!
My 16 daughter is pretty low maintenance in the whole beauty regime :) But we do talk about skin care and compare our shaving “war” stories!

i told my teenage daughter that mascara and eyeliner is enough for the summer–she’s been wanting to get tons of make-up but that only brings on wrinkles early and doesn’t let your skin breathe.
