By the Hair of my Chinny Chin Chin Chin

by Fiddledeedee on January 3, 2012

One of my chores when visiting with my elderly grandmother as a young adult was to aid her in the removal of unwanted chin hairs. Her sweet arthritic hands and failing eyesight kept her from adequately doing the job herself. While I was always happy to help her in any way possible, I do remember thinking to myself, “This is NEVER going to happen to me!”

As you know how pride almost always goes before the fall, I find myself in my middle ages dealing with unwanted chin hairs, making me feel decidedly not-so-feminine and a little bit frumpy. My husband has been known to call me Jed Clampett, just prior to his world going dark.

And as my middle aged eyes are failing me as well, I find myself sporting TWO pairs of reading glasses to be able to remove the offensive hairs, which are NOT IN THE LEAST BIT SUBTLE. In years past, here have been a few of my hair removal options:

Which I have to say are not nearly as barbaric as say, WAXING. As far as I’m concerned, a rite of passage into womanhood is the dreaded bikini wax. I attempted this at a spa about 20 years ago. Once. And it was the one and only time in my life that this little Christian girl said the four dollar bad word. I cannot imagine doing that to my face.

Recently I was asked to review the New Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo. Olay has never steered me wrong, so I was game.

The two step process involves applying the Olay Skin Guarding Balm (which is a protective coating you apply and gently massage into the skin to be treated). Then I used the actual Olay Hair Removal Cream, which is applied thickly over the area where the hair is to be removed. This remains on for 8 minutes, not to exceed 10.

I left mine on for the full 10 minutes because my hair follicles are rather stubborn. Not unlike the entirety of me. I’m happy to report there was no stinging or burning sensation whatsoever. In fact, I forgot it was even on my face until an alarmed Fiddledaddy jolted me out of my fog, “WHAT IS ON YOUR FACE?” He thought I was foaming at the mouth. Again. As it was that kind of day.

After the allotted time, I wiped the Hair Removal Cream away using a tissue, rinsed, and applied moisturizer as usual. There was absolutely no redness. And no Jed Clampett hairs either. My chin is silky smooth with not a trace of ghastly facial hair. This new system so simplifies my beauty routine. Gone are the barbaric methods of hair removal torture I’ve had to endure these last few years.

I’m Spanish so of course I have unwanted hair! I use a facial hair remover cream every 2 weeks.

Yes, but only a few. Tweezers so far takes care of the witch like mole hairs. :)

4 Kelly Lynn January 3, 2012 at 11:18 am

I’ve dealt with this since my teen years, chin and mini-moustache which grows in a charming combination of blonde and black hair. :( I’ve tried Nair and other products but I usually have bad reactions and they don’t touch some of my mutant-strength hairs. I usually use a bikinni shaver or small scissor or when I feel like really punishing myself, I pluck each individual hair. Ow.

5 Wendy Darling January 3, 2012 at 11:28 am

Unfortunately, yes. Not only chin hair, but on the “double chin” as well. I’ve tried every hair removal method under the sun (I think) to no avail. Electrolysis is not an option.

So, unfortunately I’ve had to go to the tweezers/scissors on the face area and the razor on the under the double chin area. NOT a method I would recommend, but necessary.

6 Jeanne T January 3, 2012 at 11:28 am

Some unwanted hair on my face, and I only tweeze, but sheesh, as I get older, there seems to be more!

7 Pam January 3, 2012 at 11:38 am

I have 2 chin hairs that I pluck out with tweezers and that seem to grow back too fast every time. Sometimes it is a little hard to locate them with the tweezers.

8 Jrmiss86 January 3, 2012 at 12:03 pm

As I have recently discovered that I have elevated levels of testosterone, my facial hair has taken on a bit of a dark side! I usually resort to plucking and waxing, neither of which I am a fan of, but creams usually leave me looking like a teenager with a horrible case of acne.

9 Mim January 3, 2012 at 12:06 pm

Yes, ever since I had my first child I have had to deal with unwanted hairs on my upper lip, chin and the front neck area. ugh I hate it. I’ve tweezed, waxed and occassionally razored the neck area. I recently purchased “my spring it” from beauty by rachel that makes it easy to remove the light soft hairs but not the wire like barb hairs, those still have to be plucked.

10 Lori M. January 3, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I paid the (high) price for this product, tried it once, and it didn’t work. I do want to try it again and use a thicker layer and leave it on for longer, but I keep forgetting about the test patch 48 hours beforehand. Maybe this will help me remember to do it later today!

11 Stephanie January 3, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Yes. I have been dealing with chin/mustache hair for about 10 years – hello 30′s & early 40′s. It is awful. I have had them waxed and I have used the razor before. Hate them!

12 Lisa January 3, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Thank you so much for sharing! Just last night my bff (since middle school) and I were talking late into the night (soaking up my last day and a half of vacationing in Philly) and the facial hair discussion came up. This is new to me. She suggested waxing. I cringed. Thank you for being the guinea pig! When I get back to Chicago, I’m heading right to the store for this hair removal wonder!

13 Kristie January 3, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Yes my chin has began this too…I use my trusty tweezers!

14 Sally January 3, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Wow – this sounds amazing! And yes, I will certainly blog about this – this goes under the heading “Things My Mom Forgot To Tell Me About Getting Older” sigh…

15 Jana January 3, 2012 at 2:58 pm

As of yet I only have one or two unwanted hairs on my face (not counting the eyebrows which I get waxed every six weeks when I get my hair cut and keep up with tweezers otherwise). Glad this new system is working for you!

16 Keryn January 3, 2012 at 2:58 pm

Oh, I have a few annoying dark brown hairs that magically sprout overnight. Yuck. Fortunately for me and my 35-year-old eyes, they are easy to see and remove with tweezers!

17 rrmama January 3, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Yes I have unwanted hair on my chin line and if I didn’t pluck, I’m almost certain I would have a unibrow. I do a ton of checking in the triple time magnified mirror just to make sure all of the unwanted stuff on my face is plucked off.

18 chocolatechic January 3, 2012 at 3:29 pm

Sigh…Yes…I have suffered for years, but the older I get the more of them there are and the stiffer they become.

I pluck, and use a burning facial hair removal…but that is only when I don’t have time to pluck…which is more often than not.

19 Dana Orsbun January 3, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Oh my word! I carry a pair of tweezers in my purse for those unwanted nasty things.! Everytime I go to the dentist I think, this is really good lighting, I could so do some tweezing work! hehehe. I’m always embarrassed thinking, Lord what they must be thinking of me.

20 Colleen January 3, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Tweezers! My daughter calls me Dumbledore. Don’t ‘cha just love Middle Age?

21 Elle January 3, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Yep. The nanny goat hairs plague me as well. More on one side than the other. Go figure. I’ve stuck to tweezers so far and a really strong, as in Hubble strength, magnifying mirror. I’ve heard too many horror stories of people burning off their lower jaws (practically) to risk trying the hair removal products. Plus after having my eyebrows waxed one time & trying that other type of waxing, ahem, the only hot wax that touches this skin since is that which I spill on me while trying to have a candlelight dinner.

22 Sonya Morris January 3, 2012 at 4:22 pm

Confession is good for the soul! I have waxed to remove unwanted facial hair! EEK!

23 Sonya Morris January 3, 2012 at 4:24 pm
24 Lurene January 3, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Oh my, do I have facial hair! I get my chin and eybrows and sideburns waxed every 4 or 5 weeks or so. I also use bleach on my upper lip. It’s a process, that’s for sure, and often painful!

25 cw January 3, 2012 at 6:48 pm

yes, I do. I have done laser removal in the bikini area and waxing for brows and mustache

26 GeeGee January 3, 2012 at 6:49 pm

I have tweezers in my car, my office desk, my bathroom and in my overnight bag. Somehow I find random hairs at odd moments.

27 Donna G January 3, 2012 at 6:56 pm

So far, the tweezers have handled the job of the hairs in the mole under the nose (WW of the West, anyone?) and the lovely eyebrow hairs. I bought one of those brow shaping thingies, but so far have not gotten the courage to use it.

28 Renae January 3, 2012 at 7:38 pm

I’ve been known to stand close to the mirror and pluck the hair on my chinny chin chin!

29 courtney b January 3, 2012 at 7:46 pm

31 amy pugmire January 3, 2012 at 8:28 pm

32 amy pugmire January 3, 2012 at 8:29 pm
33 Debi S January 3, 2012 at 8:40 pm

Yes, chin and upper lip hair. I usually use tweezers. I did have the laser hair removal, and it worked great, as long as I was going. After the treatments were up, the hairs are back. : ( Go figure.

34 Cammie January 3, 2012 at 9:37 pm

I’ve tried almost everything. Electrolysis worked the best, but we couldn’t afford to keep doing it.

35 Terri January 3, 2012 at 9:45 pm

I just use tweezers and a magnifying mirror for my middle aged hair issues. My 19 year old daughter has had me help her wax her upper lip twice. I always feel bad when she screams! I think I’ll check out this product for her…:-) Thanks for the review!

36 steff January 3, 2012 at 10:37 pm

37 steff January 3, 2012 at 10:38 pm
38 Stacey January 3, 2012 at 11:04 pm

JUST last night I noticed that I had some unsightly dark hairs on the upper lip which I promptly trimmed with a scissor meant for cuticles I believe. Ugh!

39 Melissa K January 4, 2012 at 6:47 am

The Italian in me has forced me to deal with chin hairs since my very early 20s. Such an unfeminine thing to think about! My norm is to pluck them. I was recently looking at this product and toying with trying it, especially since I switched to being an all out Olay gal about 6 months ago and have been so happy with everything else I’ve tried. I think it’s about time i give it a go!

40 Heidie Ward January 4, 2012 at 7:47 am

I need something to do at the traffic light!!! And when I have time on my hands in general, perhaps in the company of a good friend….method: pinched fingers, baby!

41 Anita January 4, 2012 at 10:06 am

Wow, I have really dark hair and the upper lip hair is dark and terrible. I use a facial hair bleach but the hair seems to grow fast and dark after I use that product so I have decided to wax. I will definitely try the Olay Facial Hair Remover.

42 Marsha January 4, 2012 at 10:29 am

We Greeks have the same thing. Remember that scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Love that movie. Years ago I did electrolysis for the upper lip. Also have used wax strips that you buy at the drug store … can’t remember the brand. You heat the wax by rubbing the plastic strips between your hands. I actually recently purchased a groupon to get 6 sessons of laser treatment at a discount for my chinny-chin-chin :) Ah, the things we do for beauty and vanity!

A magnifying, lighted mirror also helps so you don’t need to use 2 sets of reading glasses :)

43 Gerry January 4, 2012 at 10:43 am

Unfortunately, yes, but just a few. I use a razor.

44 Shari January 4, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Oh boy, do I! It started in *college*, and back then I could pluck my face clean, but over twenty years later, I’m to the point where I could almost have a full beard if I let myself go. It’s downright discouraging. I once saw a report on a news show about this woman who had this problem, and she discovered through a blood test that her hormones were out of whack. When I brought the issue up to my doctor, her response was for me to buy a good razor. Yeah, didn’t stick with that doctor long. :-P I would LOVE to try this product!

45 Robin M. January 4, 2012 at 4:36 pm

46 Deb Anderson January 4, 2012 at 7:26 pm

51 Cathy January 4, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I wish I could say I am WAY too young for unwanted facial hairs, but no. I’m not. I’ve had major hormone issues since I was 19 or so and unfortunately this is the result. I tweezed for the longest time, but there are getting to be too many and WAY too painful. I can’t wait to try Olay!

I JUST saw a commercial for this yesterday while I was at Pizza Hut – with my kids because they get these coupons for free pizza from school as a reward for reading, and we go in and endure their horrible service and even more horrible food and pay $20 for all the other stuff we end up ordering to go with the free pizzas. Ironically, the entire time we were there, Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares was blaring on the tv, haha!! It was so bad yesterday that I made a deal with my kids: next time they can give the free pizza coupons to me, and I’ll buy them their own Papa John’s pizza. They are thrilled.

Umm, what was my point? … oh, the commercial! So I saw it on tv and I thought it looked like it might be worth a try, but was wondering if it really worked. Lo and behold, here’s your review, so thanks!

My sis-in-law calls chin hairs a goat beard, which always makes me laugh. Thankfully I don’t have to worry about that, but I do use a cream on my upper lip. I also tried getting my eyebrows “threaded” once, but the woman had to keep having to stop (and sigh loudly and incredulously) because I was crying from the agony. Apparently that is not a common reaction. It was so humiliating, though I will say that was the best my brows have ever looked ;)

PS I loved the beginning of your post – I used to do the same thing for my Grandmother, and I hope I have someone I love to do it for me someday, too. Otherwise I might have to go back to the threading torturer.

I’m a tweezing gal. I used to be a waxing gal until a precious woman left me with 3 hairs to suffice as eyebrows. Needless to say, I’m a bit terrified now.

Confession is good for the soul, I found out this Olay product is good for unwanted facial hair removal after reading your Review, it works so well, I will try it out since I am using the razor like my husband but I’ve never measured the length of the hair, I just remove them whenever I see there is hair on my upper lips. I get stiff hairs randomly on my face and neck. Have tried radio wave removal {expensive and temporary} waxing, yuk -you have to let the hair grow out to be effective, liquid hair removal that stings the skin and finally tweezing. I will be anxious to try Olay hair removal.

75 Cindy in GA January 17, 2012 at 9:46 pm

The fuzz above my lip is a bit darker on one side than on the other, but there’s really only one hair over there that is just really dark/coarse/gross. It gets plucked the MOMENT that it tries to poke it’s icky little self above the surface. The rest I think isn’t really noticeable (I hope). I would ask dh, but he would definitely give me a safe answer. :)

And then there are the eyebrows. *shudder* They need regular attention. As soon as I forget about them for a few days, they go trying to get all wonky on me. I love my trusty tweezers.

It didn’t start until I hit my 30s, and I was SO surprised, as I am quite fair. I pretty much just put cream on to get the suckers off my face. I used to hide it from my husband but now I just don’t care…I actually enjoy watching him twitch as I sit there for ten minutes with the hair removal cream on my upper lip and chin.

Definitely get unwanted facial hair constantly! I’m serious it’s like weeds in the flower bed. I get rid of one weed & ten more pop up! My hubby & daughter like to embarass me by talking about my facial hair “mustache” when we’re out somewhere. My daughter just said to me tonight, “Mommy you need to get rid of that mustache!” Ughh! I’ve tried everything from waxing, those painful creams that I’ve left on too long and literally ripped my skin off, plucking with tweezers & even shaving (yes I know a big NO-NO!) I always seen my mom doing that so I tried it. I’ve just basically given up because it’s too painful with everything I’ve tried. It brings my self-esteem down, if I don’t do something about it though. Thank you for introducing this product! I love Olay!

GIRL!! I am a bearded lady so you don’t have to worry about me empathizing! LOL I bleach my mustache and trim it and my chin hairs with scissors! LOL There are a few chin hairs that I actually pluck because they are black, but most are at least light blond.
