This afternoon my mother-in-law called. She said, “Did you hear the news?” We’re a very large close-knit family, and news travels lightening fast through the ranks. This can be both good and bad. Depending which end of the news that you are on.
After giving birth to one of the children, I received a call, “So, how are your hemorrhoids?”
Nothing is sacred.
My mother-in-law went on to tell me an incredible story. Last night, my SIL, Cathy, heard the phone ringing. Since it was 4 in the morning, she thought about just turning over and going back to sleep. But, because she is a woman, her mind went to the dark place, “what if something is wrong…..” The phone in the bedroom wasn’t working, so she answered it in the kitchen. Long distance. Wrong number. How infuriating. As she turned to stumble back to bed she heard water running. But, nothing was turned on. She checked the dishwasher, washing machine, and bathrooms. Nothing. Then she smelled gas. She roused her husband from sleep, and he agreed, there was a gas leak. Their oldest daughter was out of town, but the two boys were sleeping in the house, so they woke them and all went outside, and the authorities were called.
Sure enough, a water line, which rubbed up against the gas line, had intermingled, causing a leak. The gas had gotten up into the rafters of the house. The fire department told them that they were incredibly fortunate that A) they woke up at all, and B) there was no explosion.
This is such a precious family. They have endured more than any parent should. They have another daughter who bravely battled cancer. Their sweet Crystal resides in heaven.
Evidently running up the phone bill.
Coincidence? I think not.
I believe there are angels among us. When Emme was about 1, we were driving on a two lane road. She was not talking yet, and was strapped into her car seat in the van. As clear as can be, suddenly she said, “Daddy, slow down.” Chilling. Especially since her vocabulary was limited to “mama, dada, poopoo, and Helga.”
To this day I have no idea who “Helga” is.
Without question, Fiddledaddy began braking. At the same time, a car traveling in the opposite direction swerved into our lane. Because we had slowed, we were able to veer right and he missed us. Had we not slowed down, we would have been hit head on.
After we caught our breath, we looked back at Emme. With wide eyes, she was holding her throat, as though it hurt.
I don’t always understand God’s ways. But one thing I do know is that the phone call from my MIL today made me pause to give thanks that I serve an omnipotent God who is capable of miracles. Both large and small.

Wow. Both of the experiences you shared gave me chills.
Just amazing…
Both of those stories gave me chills and gave me that feeling in my stomach of someone being very fortunate that “someone” was watching out for them. Both of these are only proof that He touches our lives in so many wonderful ways.
**I believe there are angels among us.**
I know there are.
Wow, I have chill bumps now and it has nothing to do with the temperature!! Thanks for sharing!
Love it..Glad everyone is okay
Oh sweet friend stories like this give me chills. But God is on our side, and he knows everything. Coincidence? I think not. I just look at them as things God just has not explained to us, because we are on a “need to know basis.” And all I need to know is “he’s got my back!”
Blessings.
Talk about ‘out of the mouth of babes’! Glad to hear your SIL and family are ok…I’m a firm believer that a lot of our “women’s intuition” is a Hallelujah Hotline.
Great post.
Oooohh, I have goosebumps. Thanks for sharing these stories.
Wow, both of those experiences are amazing. I have had things like that occur on more than one occasion.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I’m speechless, yet at the same time I’m praising Him!
amazing and yet I too believe it… WOW…
Ditto on the chills. Would you mind if I linked to you in a future post? I like to highlight stories of God at work that I find in the blogosphere. (Hi Cindy!!!!) ; )
God is indeeed AWESOME!!
Thank you so much for sharing this.
I love to hear stories like these…amazing, absolutely amazing!!!
Ooohhh. I got chills from this one. We serve an Awesome God! Thanks for sharing!
I L-O-V-E those types of stories! Encourages me to believe a little more in God’s great Providence and protection! Thanks for sharing!
God is Good! He uses whatever He needs to get our attention! Wonderful stories and what testimony. Instead of coinsidences – my family calls them
“Godsidences”.
So glad they are safe! What good reminders to pay attention to the least things. God can and does use all things.
Blessings,
Julie
PTL!!
Ooo . . . Just like when my oldest was a baby and she would talk to Rob’s dad — who passed away 6 years before she was born . . .
My b-in-law and his wife were woken up about a year ago by their five-year-old throwing up everywhere. No one else was sick. They could hardly rouse their other two kids, but my bil ended up carrying everyone out of the house. There was a gas leak too, and they were all slowly falling asleep…for good. Had their kid not started throwing up, none of them would be here today.
Anyone who says that God isn’t active in this world today has some serious rethinking to do. God is good and faithful in all things. IN ALL THINGS.
Thank you for sharing such an awe-inspiring, God-praising detail in this everyday thing we call life. (And I’m really glad that everyone is okay.)
What an awesome God we serve…I am so glad everyone is okay – when things like this happen, it’s easy to see God is in the details.
i wanted to comment but i don’t have anything to say except wow.
Our God is wonderful and amazing. Thanks for sharing this story of His love with us.
Wow! Biggest goosebumps ever.
Yeah, I echo everyone else’s comments – this story is chilling and leaves me with a sense of thankfulness. God works in mysterious ways, no doubt about it.
You just gave me chills! Definitely an angel!
and that head on colission would have meant certain death for someone. Thank God he can do the unexplainable.
I do believe we have angels among us. . .I can’t tell you how many times someone in our family has had a close call similar to your post. Wow.
God is good, all the time. And His guardian angels watch over us.
Oh wow. Oh wow. A family friend had a similar story. Only she has no sense of smell. She noticed their gas stove was turned on. One little electric shock and their house and them would have blown sky-high. She thought she heard their youngest dd cry. She hadn’t.
I came over here to read a funny post that was not about poop. But instead I read that. (if you wanna understand that statement, you’ll have to read my blog today.)
Praise God! Thanks for sharing…and hope the hemorrhoids are better.
I believe in angels and I always have. There have been too many times I know for sure angels intervened on my behalf.
The image of sweet Crystal up in heaven, running up the phone bill, just made me smile.
Chill bumps on my arms and tears in my eyes. I do believe, I do believe!
All I can say is wow. Seems so inadequate to describe such awesome miracles doesn’t it? I think if we knew all the things He saves us from we would be overwhelmed. We serve an amazing God!
Chills. Thanks for the reminder
WOW! I have chills! Visiting from Mama Mia.
Thanks for sharing this story!
Blessings…
Amazing!!! God is good!!!!
I got shivers from both stories! Wow.
I believe it! I had an angel come to me when my son was born. Amazing!
I am not an active blogger by I enjoyed your story.
This reminded me of when my sister was a baby. One day my oldest brother came home and went straight to her crib to give her a kiss. He noticed her face was blue and she seemed to be struggling to breathe. My parents took her to the ER immediately. My mom says that she remembers seeing as the Drs rushed in and started working on her. She remembers one of the Drs. A lady. She said she had red hair. This Dr. was able to stabalize my sister. The day after my mom came to the hospital to personally thank the Dr or nurse who had saved her baby’s life. The people at the hospital said that the night before they had no women on staff. Only some young interns and male Doctors. My mom cried and thanked the Lord for sending that special someone…an angel.
Oh my… chills like crazy. and a little teary too. I’ve been reading about sooo many experiences like these and it just gets me every time. God is just so amazing… SO AMAZING. I’m so thankful for the “wrong number” phone call, and the sudden vocabulary from your sweet baby girl. Wow!
Thank you for publishing these two wonderful reminders of the awesome God we serve. Amazing isn’t it that the Maker of heaven and earth should care about us as He does?
God Is!
I love it when God does things like this. You can’t deny Him. I can’t deny Him.
Wow, God is good, and whenever things seem unpleasant, God is working behind the scene. All things work for the good of those who love Him yes?
In Him,
~Lawrence~
