Can’t Touch This

by Fiddledeedee on June 28, 2007

I was slicing tomatoes for the evening meal when I heard Cailey ask, “Mom, can we listen to some music?” A little music sounds good. It’s a step up from the sounds of sibling bickering that I’m forced to referee while slicing and dicing.

“Cailey, what do you want to listen to?” I ask as I prepare myself mentally to listen to their VBS music for the ONE THOUSANDTH time.

“Hip hop.”

My knife comes to a sudden stop midway through a cucumber. “What did you say?”

“You know, Mom, HIP HOP.” As though saying it louder and enunciating it more clearly will help me to better understand her sudden switch in musical genre. Because, she has a mother who is, after all, ancient, by any five year olds standards.

“Where did you hear about Hip hop?” Knowing full well that the words “hip” and “hop” have never passed my lips linked together in the same sentence. Near exasperation, “Mom, you know, Hammer Time.”

“Oh. Well. Sure.”

She’s referring to M.C. Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” CD that originally made it’s debut back when parachute pants were all the rage, and yes, I owned three pair. One of which was tye dyed. And right this very minute I shudder to think how big my behind would look in them now.

My children’s musical collection is limited to Veggie Tales, lullaby tapes, Bear in the Big Blue House, children’s praise music, and Baby Einstein.

And M.C. Hammer.

When Emme was very small, for some odd reason, I was listening to an oldies station in the car, and “Can’t Touch This” came on. I watched this usually demure little waif totally ROCK OUT in her carseat. And since I know that the brother is a Godly man, and there is nothing offensive on the CD, I did what any mother who does not indulge in her child’s every whim would do. I bought it for her at once.

So, I was able to enjoy “Don’t Touch This” while I finished dinner. Because, oh for the love of mike, why do children have to listen to music that is SO LOUD! (And if my Dad were to read this he will be chuckling at this moment. Revenge is sweet.) Occasionally I would look over into the family room to watch my three children gettin’ jiggy wit the sounds of some hip hop. While toppling the furniture.

And I noticed that every one of my children inherited their mother’s absolute lack of any rhythm and dance capabilities whatsoever.

It was a proud moment, to be sure.

Now that is just plain HILARIOUS! My ringtone is “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer. And oh yes, I too had the misfortune to have a few pairs of those pants. In rainbow colours. I was the envy of my friends. I need new friends.

Party! Sounds like so much fun. And by the way. My husband has a saying in our house, “If it’s too loud, you’re too old.” He is NOT on my side when it comes to the volumes around here.

Oh good grief! We must be about the same age! Hammer time?! ROFL

Yesterday, our little town’s “Wednesday Brown Bag concert series” started and the first performer was a man who did covers of 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s songs! LOL And, in the midst of trying to keep Pojke from wandering off from our picnic lunch, I turned to hear Flicka (whose music experience has been limited to Fisher Price CDs, Baby Einstein, classical and P&W music) singing the lyrics to some song I know she’s never heard at OUR house! LOL

You are 2 Legit, 2 Legit 2 Quit, my friend.
Keep it reals, yo.

Gettin’ jiggy wit? Okay, Honey. You need to get out a bit more. Put the knife down and step away from the tomato.

My kids are actually the ones that ask me to turn it down. I’ve always liked my music loud, but I have a feeling that I need it to be loud now so I can hear it-not because I’m hip!

And DeeDee, if you ever run across a picture of you in those pants…I am begging you, please do NOT post it! I want to remember you just the way you are.

YOU GOT TO PRAY JUST TO MAKE IT TODAY

(yeeeeeah)

What a great story!!! I love the revenge is sweet part!!! hahaha!

My kids LOVE that stuff–sad but true, and I usually listen to classical, jazz/blues (40′s), and alternative (old alternative–Morisssey, Psychadelic Furs, etc.) with some Christian music thrown in. I hate our local stations because when I am in the car trying to search and hit the Christian station or the alternative station it hits 20 country stations and one Hip hip/rap–which always is saying something very offensive and which my 7 year old desperately wants to listen to. Ew.

Oh, dear….

My daughters have recently found the joy of C&C Music Factory’s “Everybody Dance Now!” They take it quite literally.

11 Shalee June 28, 2007 at 9:50 am

Wait wait wait… you heard MC Hammer on the OLDIES station… Oh my lands, I’m so not ready for 80′s to be “the” music on that frequency quite yet.

This reminds me of a post I wrote last year.

http://shalees.blogspot.com/2006/02/what-goes-around-comes-around-again.html

Sometimes you just have to dance like no one is watching… At least PRAY that no one is watching and taking notes.

And I love that I never did the parachute pants – or the bubble skirts. I did have a few things going for me in HS…

Great. Just spiffy. Now I have that song running through my head. :^)

13 Lindsey @ enjoythejourney June 28, 2007 at 10:16 am

My kids love to listen to “Brickhouse” (she’s a brick……hoooowse!) :)

And you know, MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This is classic. So I wouldn’t worry :)

My kids love MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This! We have totally rockin’ carseats in our van. They also love the soundtrack to Mama Mia and their favourite is “we will, we will – ROCK YOU!”. I must look pretty hip (ah, not!!) with this music blaring at the red lights but it gets us through the day. My kids think I’m pretty cool and that’s all that counts right?

15 Jill June 28, 2007 at 12:12 pm

I almost always play Christian music in the car cause otherwise you can never be sure what you get, but on the rare occasion I don’t my oldest has grown fond of a few songs. “Hey Ya!” by Outkast and “Irreplacable” by Beyonce. I caught her singing the latter the other day while shaking her hips and pointing left. For whatever reason kids just love those beats. Thank God for Kirk Franklin.

ROFL….i am glad i have my kids convinced they found bon jovi first and dont mind a bit blaring it as we go about…lol
tho today was an equally interesting view K wanted the cowboy cd(trace adkins….my other boyfriend) and put it in….the child was dancing so hard he shook the car

i had a couple pair of those pants and the bubble skirts as well
but my favorite of the fads that came and went around that same time was those bubble jumpsuit things that came out the next year or two afte hammer pants…

HA! HeHee! Yep, it’s going through my head too now. Thank ya very much!

My 16 mo old moves to music. My husband and I both love music and have played alot of it. He plays drums and I play keyboards. That’s what we were doing while I was pregnant with Josh. So Joshua is bound to have rhythm. He bounces to it in the house and in stores. He got a lady’s attention in WalMart one day when she opened one of those musical cards and he started bouncing to it! Oh and by the way, I seem to recall an outfit I had in the late 80s and early 90s (I don’t know what you call it), but it was one piece….short sleeved, long pants, big buttons, had flowers on it, and hard to get out of when I had to go to the bathroom. Remember those??

Woohoo! I love the additional lyrics in all the comments. LOVE IT! When Aimee started with 2 legit, my fingers started involuntarily going through the motions and at the end of her comment I added the “Hey, heeey” in my head. Dude.

We are pretty partial to KC and the Sunshine Band in this house, and early The Jackson 5 stuff. Jake just loves anything with a good beat…

19 Dena June 28, 2007 at 1:37 pm

hahahhaahahaha- I love some MC Hammer! We listen to it at the gym and people do stare a bit when I know EVERY word!

20 ComfyDenim June 28, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Dinner prepping time is the PERFECT time for loud music.
Around here it could be anything — Passion, Veggie Tales, Sandra Boynton’s Dog Train, Hillsong, Harry Connick Jr., BB King – but I haven’t introduced them to hip hop yet.

Nor did I know Hammer was a Godly man…
Hmmm…wonder what they’d think..

21 Deidre June 28, 2007 at 8:12 pm

That’s one of those songs you secretly like, but would never admit. Oh, yes, I danced to some MC Hammer back in the day :) I can’t say my kids have heard it yet, but I will tell you they love C&C Music Factory “Everybody Dance Now”

Admit it…you just started singing along, didn’t you? :)

22 Cyndi June 28, 2007 at 8:56 pm

It’s-Hamma-Go-Hamma-MC-Hamma-Yo-Hamma…

LOL!! Loved this post!

Um, never heard that song, though. :::whistling and looking around innocently:::

23 Jen June 29, 2007 at 6:56 am

ROFL! What WERE we thinking with those parachute pants? One style that should stay in the fashion graveyard, I agree! If they were to come back I am afraid I would break out with “Can’t Touch Those!”

24 Mommy, the Human Napkin June 29, 2007 at 8:54 am

My mind suddenly pictured my daughter, when she was about 18 months old, doing the little pony-prance that was her own special dance. The TV was on and she was dancing to the Black Eyed Peas song that plays in the Garfield movie (“Hey, Mama,” I think it’s called?). I have never laughed so hard in my life.

I had Hammer Pants, too. I was so stylin’. In seventh grade. It was sad, though, because I never could quite do the Hammer dance, try though I might.

I must be the oldest person who posts on here. I *knew* MC Hammer is in the music biz, as opposed to having a career say, as an astronaut or something, but probably have never even heard his stuff, because I have no radio/stereo system in my vehicle and I turn on the radio about once or twice a year in the house. My CD collection is small and when I listen to music it is usually Andrea Bocelli. Can’t get enough of him…

My boys have their iPods, so I don’t hear what they listen to.

One of my most cherished memories is from the early 90′s when we bought the Northern Exposure (TV show) soundtrack, an eclectric collection of music, and my three young boys would dance around the family room with total abandon. They made me laugh so hard. I always wanted to video tape them, but they refused, so it just remains a movie in my head.

26 Grafted Branch June 29, 2007 at 9:47 am

MC Hammer is the new Elvis…and you know what our parents…er, grandparents said about Elvis.

Tragic.

I’m kidding.

Well, sort of. ;)

27 Kat June 29, 2007 at 1:03 pm

Love that song! You gotta dance when you hear it. Hope you did! Cute post.

Hugs!
Kat

ohhhhh….I LOVED MC Hammer (and still do). Even went to his concert many years ago that opened with the ever so talented Vanilla Ice. Oh, yeah. I am soooo cool.
Our family can often be caught jammin to those “oldie” hip hop songs. They’re just plain fun.

31 bee June 30, 2007 at 8:31 pm

That Emme is one cool kid!

32 eRin June 30, 2007 at 8:58 pm

A few months ago, I watched MC Hammer’s life story on TV…very interesting!!!
My kids have been listening to “Can’t Touch This” on Radio Disney for the last year. It definitely brings back some crazy memories for me;)

That is very funny! My kids can have some very strange, for kids, taste in music also.
