Once Upon A Mattress

by Fiddledeedee on February 3, 2007

When my husband and I were newly married, our first big-ticket item purchase was a mattress. It is safe to say that our first marital spat involved the selection of said mattress. Size does matter, ya’ll. I was opting for the full size, pillow top, feels as though you’re sleeping on air quality mattress. My husband leaned toward the Super Deluxe KING size, takes up the whole room, feels like you’re sleeping on a rock version.

So we compromised.

We purchased the KING size PILLOW TOP super deluxe mattress. While it did indeed take up the entire bedroom, and may have extended out into the hall, I no longer cared. I built my nest each night, and snuggled down allowing the pillow top to envelop me in it’s soft comfort. Heaven. After a few weeks of this, my husband could no longer stand up straight. Something had to give.

So we compromised.

Some very bad men came and took my piece of heaven away, and replaced it with a king sized stone. We tried everything to make my side of the universe more comfortable. I got a little feather bed to put on top of the mattress. The Sneezing tended to keep everyone awake. And I was miserable. And if the little woman is unhappy, well, you know the rest.

So we compromised.

At this point I was pregnant with Emme. Therefore, making his wife as comfortable as possible was high on my husband’s list of priorities. He did his research, and we bit the bullet and purchased a Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed. You know, the one that Lindsay Wagner hocks on infomercials. Although, for the life of us, we cannot fathom why she always looks so tired in those commercials. This mattress has controls on each side, so that it’s owners can select how soft or how firm they desire their side of the bed to be. Hence the name, Select Comfort. I’m a 20, my husband is 85. I have no vested interest in this company, other than to say that they may have saved my marriage, but we’ve had this mattress for 8 years and sing it’s praises every time we fall into it at night, exhausted and weary. And yes, thank goodness my husband had the foresight to opt for the king size. Who knew I would get so huge with each of my three pregnancies?

My Emme has been sick this week, and last night she came down the hall with big, red, sad, sick eyes and said, “Can’t I just lay down with you guys for a little while?” As my Aunt Audine would say, “She looked like she’d been pulled through a knot hole.” But we have a hard and fast rule in our house that everyone sleeps in their own bed at night.

So we compromised.

We settled her between us. I may have drifted off, but began dreaming about someone stomping on broken glass. A kick awakened me. It seems my mild complacent by day daughter, becomes aggressive, angry girl in her sleep at night. She grinds her teeth, argues (presumably with her sister) and kicks whoever is closest just to make her point.

I’m going to sit down today and pen a letter to Select Comfort to see what our options are regarding a Kingdom sized mattress. After an unhealthy amount of caffeine is consumed. I have no idea where we’ll put it, but that’s the least of my concerns. The children are not getting any smaller, you know.

And neither am I for that matter.

I am apparently channeling you..we had the SAME THING happen to us recently. Here is our compromise–we got a “new to us” sofa from my mom, put most of our old sectional in the finished garage/playroom area–and moved the large lounge part of the sectional up to our room–and put it at the end of our king sized bed. This was now the dogs bed! HAHAHA. Last night, our son, who has been fighting a cold for a week, HAD to sleep with us. Um…he kicks too, talks in his sleep, and I like to burrow. So–we kicked the dog off her bed, put a clean blanket down, and his pillows and all his blankets down on the old sofa part–and made him his OWN little bed. Needless to say, we all got some sleep, but he woke up WAY too early! And since we don’t have any toys for him in our room–he decided to wake us up too–so he could watch Wonder Pets.

Sorry for rambling!!!!!!

My Husband and I have the opposite problem. I like and need the rock, he likes and needs the pillow. Since our eldest is actually sleeping on his “bachelor” mattress, when she decides to join us in bed my husband gleefully runs to her room to snatch up her squishy bed. Nobody seems to mind this over much :)

Have I got the TIP for you! This is our best marriage-saving, sleep-saving, sanity-saving idea. Check out the Kids Aerobed (just go to Amazon and type in Kids Aerobed). This comfy inflatable bed fits nicely beside our king-sized bed and is just the ticket when LoveBug wants to join us. We use it most often in the spring, when thunderstorms are in season. Also great for travel! I’m not kiddin’, check it out :)

I like my California King side so soft and squooshy and loaded with about 12-15 pillows! Our kids never slept with us, but our 50 pound bulldog does and takes up most of the room and snores louder than both of us! Plus when I am asleep she tries to steal one of my pillows! But I can tell the difference between 15 and 14 pillows so I awake and quickly snatch it away from the thief!

I’ve heard good things about the bed Everyday Mommy recommends!

Have a great Super Bowl weekend! Go Colts!

We just recently went to a KING size bed. LOVE IT! When we were first married, we shared a full-size, then went to Queen, now King. I cannot imagine how we fit on a full size.

Well, now you’ve just about talked me into a KING size SLEEP NUMBER bed!
Our poor queen-sized rock is becoming quite the tight squeeze when the 6 year old and 4 year old come *s n e a k i n g* in during the night. I dread to think of the day the one year picks up this habit!

A friend of mine wrote a children’s picture book years ago called _The Cuddlers_ (Stacy Morgan), about kids creeping into bed at night, one by one. It’s romanticized, however; nobody is dreaming of stomping on broken glass. Instead, the kids dream of carousels and other lovely things–raindrops on roses and that kind of thing. The story is lovely, though, and really makes a person want to buy the biggest bed possible to contain all of that love and all those dreams as long as possible…

My kids are getting so big.

You’re making me all melancholy.

They do climb in some lazy weekend mornings to talk, read books, snuggle. Even the older ones. The morning option is nice–we still get to cuddle together without being squeezed out or pummeled in our “sleep” by toss-turning visitors.

Oh, I want one of those beds!
Hey, off the subject, what homeschool curriculum do you use? Have you ever heard of Robinson Curriculum?

A kingdom sized mattress – I like that! We have a king and would never go back to a smaller one. The kids know that if they come in at night, go to Daddy’s side. He’ll sleep through it and they just crawl right in; I wake up and send them back to bed.

oooh I love my pillow top mattress. I had one on my queen size bed which my oldest daughter now has. So, we bought the same kind when we recently bought our king size bed. When people come over and sleep on one of our beds they are always asking about them. I’ve missed out on the kiddos wanting to sleep with us…mine never really do, but they sure did as infants!

Every time one of those commercials come on I ask the same question. Why is she always so tired looking? Odd indeed.

Oh poop. The link didn’t copy right. Whoo boy. I know, I know your dear man from shoutlife.com. I left a link on his page. He left me the funniest comment. (the blog is somewhat about him)

We love our California King Select Comfort bed mattress. It was the best investment that we’ve made. It makes such a huge difference. I love my soft, cozy side while hubby likes his firm side. Ah, now if we could just find a solution for the snoring…
